TERTIA DU TOIT
'TIETIESDRAAI'
20 July 2002
- 7 August 2002
Without realizing it - Tertia du Toit's work is represented in a lot of South African households through her numerous beautiful designs on well known bottles of jams, spices and wines and the many book covers of known South African authors. 'Tietiesdraai' is Tertia's second solo exhibition and is a collection of paintings that dances around the idea of 'being a woman'. The paintings are a lyrical focus on the female figure and they hint playfully at eroticism. The work is full of elements of 'sweetness' and abundance, milkmaids and Madonnas, a 'tombola' of life's pleasures. As a whole, the exhibition is a colourful invitation to the wholesome enjoyment of life. This exhibition is a sequence to Tertia's previous, very successful, exhibition titled 'Soen my Lemoene' (Kiss my Oranges) described as 'an uninhibited, outpouring of inspiration, life, creativity and love'.

Tertia du Toit finished her art studies at the University of Pretoria in 1992. From 1996 she held educational positions at the University of Pretoria, Open Window Academy of Art, Pretoria and the University of Stellenbosch. Since 1989 Tertia has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and this will be her second solo exhibition. She has been commissioned to do more than 30 book covers for Human & Rousseau, Tafelberg and Lapa Publishers. Her designs can be seen on more than 20 commercial products including: All Gold's connoisseur jam & pasta sauces; Robertson's Herbs & Spices; Douglas Green's Saint series & Export collection; etc. Her paintings are found in numerous private and public collections here and abroad.
